How do I repot my houseplant?
Repotting doesn’t always mean planting your houseplants into a bigger pot - it can sometimes just be about refreshing the soil and keeping your plant in it’s existing nursery pot.
We suggest refreshing the soil of houseplants at least once a year - it basically will give your plants a whole new load of nutrients that will see it through growing season.
Grab yourself a repotting mat (or newspaper) some new potting mix suitable for your plant species and a pair of clean sharp scissors and follow the steps in the video - more details in captions below 👇
1. Squeeze around the nursery pot to loosen the plant, turn it on its side and holding the plant gently by the stems slide it out of its nursery pot.
2. Gently loosen the roots with your hands. Use this as a chance to check the health of your roots - they should be white and firm. Trim away any brown or threadlike roots.
3. Remove at least 1/3 of the old soil surrounding the roots - don’t worry about removing it all.
4. Pour a layer of your new potting mix into the nursery pot. If at this stage you’re unsure if your plant needs to go up a pot size, check out our previous Repotting video.
5. Position your plant onto the new potting mix, making sure it is centred, and then continue to add fresh potting mix around the plant to hold in place. Gently pat this down but not too much.
6. Grab a tray and lightly water your plant to encourage the roots to settle. Drain off any excess water.
7. Wipe down the leaves to get rid of any dust or soil that might have dirtied the leaves during your repot.
Repot DONE. 👊
