Our Top Tips for Autumn

Autumn is officially here and your plants are getting ready to hit dormancy, before waking up again next spring. Follow our top tips below to keep your plants on form as we head into Autumn.

1/ Bring plants indoors

If you moved your houseplants outdoors to enjoy the warm summer weather, now is the time to bring them back in as temperatures start to drop. Give the leaves a quick scan and make sure you’ve given them a good rinse and wiped down all the leaves before they come indoors to ensure they haven’t picked up any pests while outside.

2 /  Increase access to light.

As the days get shorter and darker, it’s important to maximise the amount of light your plants get. This may mean moving them slightly nearer to a window, or to a different room altogether. LED bulbs with a high lumen count are a good shout for artificial light if not enough natural light hits your space.

3/ Cut back on watering.

Less light = less growth, so you’ll have to take it down a notch with the watering. Make sure your plant has had time to dry out in between waterings. If this means you are only watering once a month, that’s ok.

4/ Increase humidity.

When heating goes on indoors, the air becomes a drier, so it’s important to maintain a high level of humidity to stop leaves from crisping up - particularly with those more sensitive plants like calatheas. Increase humidity by misting regularly, placing plants on a wet pebble tray or investing in a little humidifier.

5/ Stop any feeding.

Similarly with watering, less light means less growing, and your plant won’t need additional feeding during dormant period.

6/ Clean your leaves.

Leaves can quickly collect dust which limits the plants ability to absorb sunlight and photosynthesise. Use a damp, lint free cloth to wipe down your leaves. Your plants will thank you for it.
