Ready… Set... Spring!

Spring is officially here, and your plants are about to step it up a gear as they wake up from their Winter dormancy and get set for growing season.  It’s important you prep your plants for this stage, so you (and they) can enjoy as much lush growth as possible over the coming months. Check out our Top Plant Care Tips for Spring below.

#1 PRUNE

Your plants may be looking a bit on the sad side at the moment - wilted, brown or yellow leaves will not only look unattractive, but they will eventually attract pests, encourage rot and will drain your plants’ energy when it could be used for new growth instead.

How do I prune my plants?

With a sharp, sterilised pair of scissors, prune back any dead foliage from your plant to make way for new growth.

#2 PROPAGATE

One of our favourite parts of spring is experimenting with propagating our plants. Depending on the plant you have, you can propagate by Stem Cuttings (good for Sweetheart Plants, Pothos and Pilea’s) Division (works well for calatheas and ferns) or Leaf Rooting Cuttings (great for succulents).

#3 REPOT

Repotting is key if you want your plants to thrive. Your plant will have used up a lot of the nutrients from its soil over the past year, so a soil refresh will be needed. At the same time take a look at your plants’ roots - if you see a dense ‘web’ of roots which have completely taken up the space in the pot or are protruding out of the pot, it’s best to repot with fresh soil in a slightly bigger nursery pot to allow room for growth.

#4 WATER

As the temperature heats up, you will need to look at your watering schedule - your plants are likely to need watering more frequently. You want to avoid constant soggy/saturated water as this will just encourage root rot.

What are the sure signs I need to water my houseplants?

Curling leaves and dry soil - if you spot these signs give your plant a good drink.

#5 HUMIDITY

Most indoor plant varieties thrive in humid environments, so in the warmer months make sure you have a mister handy and give those plants a daily mist if you can. They will love you for it!

#6 POSITION

The days are getting longer and brighter and sunlight is at its most intense, so plants that you may have positioned nearer a window to receive light over the winter may now need to be moved to avoid that harsh, direct sunlight, which can scorch your plants’ leaves. Position where they will still receive good levels of natural light. Remember to rotate your plants 90 degrees or so everytime you water, to encourage even growth.

How can I increase humidity?

Clustering your plants into groups will help increase the humidity
