Kentia Palm

a.k.a Howea Forsteriana // Kentia Palm // Thatch Palm

Native to Lord Howe Island in Australia, the Howea Forsteriana is also commonly called the Kentia Palm. It is one of the most popular indoor palms as it is low maintenance and able to withstand conditions that many other house plants cannot. The Kentia Palm is an excellent air purifier and brings a lush indoor jungle vibe to any interior with its elegant, tropical foliage.

Top Tips

✔ Use a damp cloth to remove any dust from the leaves regularly

✔ Position the Kentia Palm in a spot where it will have plenty of room to grow and spread out

Plant Care

  • The Kentia Palm is tolerant of low light but, for the plant to produce the best growth, it prefers to be positioned in a spot that receives lots of bright, indirect light.

  • Overwatering a Kentia Palm can lead to root rot, so it is best to allow the top soil to dry out between waterings, checking the top soil by touch is the best way to see whether your plant needs watering. Make sure when watering that the soil is evenly moist but not soggy.

  • Like any tropical plant the Kentia Palm thrives in a humid environment, it is recommended that the plant is misted every other day to help increase humidity levels.

  • To maintain the Kentia Palm’s growth, feed it once a month during the Spring and Summer with liquid fertiliser.

  • In its natural habitat, the Kentia Palm prefers a consistently warm environment, although it can survive in cooler conditions, it is recommended that the room it is positioned in does not fall below 12°C.

  • This plant is not toxic.

  • The only way to reproduce the Kentia Palm is by planting seeds. However, due to indoor conditions, when grown indoors the Kentia Palm will rarely bloom and produce seeds.

  • Avoid repotting a Kentia Palm unless completely necessary, the plant does not enjoy being repotted and doing so can cause it to go into shock.
