Plant Profile

Lipstick Plant

a.k.a. Aeschynanthus radicans

Lipstick Plant, also known as Aeschynanthus radicans, is a unique tropical plant known for its tubular-shaped flowers that resemble a tube of lipstick. The plant has long, slender, green leaves that grow out of trailing stems. Lipstick Plants have vibrant red, orange, yellow, or pink flowers that bloom in clusters at the ends of their stems. These plants grow up to 2-3 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide.

Top Tips

✔ Lipstick Plant has a unique pollination mechanism. The tubular-shaped flowers of the plant are visited by hummingbirds and bees. As they suck nectar from the flower, the anthers of the flower stick to their head and deposit pollen on the next flower they visit, helping to continue the plant's lifecycle.

✔ Lipstick Plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight and high humidity levels.

✔ Fertilise the Lipstick Plant every two weeks during the growing season.

Plant Care

  • Lipstick Plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight but can tolerate some shade. Inadequate light can stunt the growth of the plant and cause the leaves to become weak and thin.

  • Lipstick Plants prefer well-draining soil and require moderate watering. Water the plant once a week, ensuring that the soil stays evenly moist, but not wet. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause root rot.

  • Lipstick Plants prefer warm temperatures and high humidity levels. A humidifier or regular misting can help keep the plant healthy.

  • Lipstick Plants prefer warm temperatures between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C).

  • Lipstick Plant is non-toxic, making it an excellent choice for households with children and pets.

  • Lipstick Plants can be propagated by stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem about 4 inches long and remove the lower leaves, leaving only a few at the top. Insert the stem into well-draining soil mixture, water lightly, and place the plant in a bright location. Cover the plant with a plastic bag to increase humidity and decrease stress on the plant.
